GO TOPCerberus Sample Handling Notes
Serology Sample Handling
- Samples which are being transported overnight on the same day as they were collected can be shipped at 4˚C using approved transport containers and cool packs or ice.
- All other samples should be shipped frozen, preferably using an overnight service. Two to four cool packs or 0.5 – 1kg of ice are usually adequate depending on the type of container, the number of samples and the ambient temperature.
- Generally it is not necessary to ship using dry ice, however during hot summer conditions it may be advisable to do so. If you choose to ship on dry ice, please ensure that all shipping and transport box requirements are met.
- Handy Hint: Optimal shipping conditions can be achieved by freezing the entire package with its lid open at -20˚C or lower overnight prior to pick up.
- Please note: To assist in speedy processing of your samples we would advise that all serum samples be submitted in push-top or screw top 1.5 mL vials. Ensure that sample vials/tubes are sealed and airtight to avoid leakage.
- Label samples clearly using an indelible marker or other waterproof means of identification. Samples should be placed inside a plastic bag or immobilised in some other fashion.
- Include a Submission Form or letter with the samples detailing the species, serum dilution (if applicable), serology panel or individual test(s) required. Submission forms can be downloaded from our website www.cerberus.net.au in PDF format or alternatively submissions can be made online.
- We would also appreciate a description of any bio-hazards associated with the samples.
- Please use a separate serology submission form for each different species of animal and serology panel or group of tests requested
Pathology Sample Handling
- All live animal submissions to Cerberus Sciences must be pre-booked to ensure that animals are processed in a timely manner. Please ring, e-mail or fax the laboratory with your requirements and animal numbers to be submitted for confirmation of service availability.
- All animals must be transported according to IATA guidelines and appropriate animal welfare considerations, particularly during extreme weather conditions. Please ensure that you are aware of prevailing weather conditions in Melbourne prior to transport.
- A link to weather conditions in Melbourne can be found here.
- Please ensure that appropriate amounts of feed, bedding and hydrating material are available for the animal(s) for a 24 hour period in the event that shipments are delayed.
Molecular Diagnostics Sample Handling
- Collection of ALL sample types should be performed aseptically to minimise the possibility of contamination.
- CELL SAMPLES Please supply cells in duplicate. Minimum number of cells required is 2 vials each containing at least 1 x 106 cells. Cells should be spun at approx 12000 rpm for 2 minutes, the supernatant removed and the cell pellet frozen in preparation for shipment.
- TISSUE SAMPLES It is recommended that frozen tissue samples are sent.
- FAECAL PELLETS It is preferable that 2-3 fresh faecal pellets are collected directly from the animal into an eppendorf tube. Pellets can be frozen in preparation for shipment.
