Rat Molecular Testing Services
Cerberus Sciences offers a wide range of polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assays for the detection of multiple pathogens concerning rats. Our list of available assays is continually growing so please contact us if the test you require is not listed.
Samples may be submitted as faeces, tissues, exhaust air dust (EAD), FLOQ swabs (respiratory, pelt, environmental dust, sentinel-free bedding, or cage), filter media (from sentinel-free bedding or cages), or from live animals, depending on the pathogen to be detected and the facility requirements. . Survival sampling has enhanced simplicity of quarantine testing of valuable animals, disease outbreak management, sample collection and transportation.
As the variety of agents available for testing is vast, the testing frequency and agent prevalence should be considered. Cerberus can assist in developing a suitable testing regime for your facility.

* BAC Cerberus recommends testing by Bacteriology methods. PCR may be used for confirmation testing where applicable.
** EAD also covers other environmental surveillance methods, including dust FLOQ swabs, filter media, and sentinel-free bedding
Molecular Environmental Surveillance Panels (EAD/ES)
Advances in technology and the drive to reduce animal usage are leading more facilities to adopt novel health screening approaches, such as Exhaust Air Dust (EAD) and Sentinel-Free Bedding Sampling (SFBS), over traditional methods involving sentinel animals. These techniques support the 3Rs—Replacement, Reduction, and Refinement—by decreasing the number of sentinel animals used, while also enhancing surveillance sensitivity, flexibility, and efficiency in colony health monitoring.
Cerberus PCR assays can detect a variety of viruses, bacteria, and parasites in environmental samples (ES) collected from a broad range of sources, including racks, cages, Air Handling Units (AHUs), surfaces, plenums, airflow areas, and sentinel free bedding. Three EAD/ES panels are available for selection, and custom panels can be designed to suit your facility’s specific requirements.
